Introduction
The Mass Spectrometry Laboratory (333-2545) provides varied services with capabilities in all modern methods of organic and biological mass spectrometry. The main lab is in room 31 Noyes Laboratory. Offices and other labs are in rooms 21, 25, 35, 37, 42, 46, and 47.
Methods and ionization techniques available are: low and high resolution electron impact (EI), low and high resolution chemical ionization (CI), low resolution field ionization (FI), low resolution field desorption (FD), low and high resolution fast atom bombardment (FAB), low and high resolution electrospray (ESI), low resolution matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI), MS/MS (ESI and MALDI), isotope ratio (FI), GC/MS (EI, CI, and FI), and LC/MS (ESI). Mass spectrometers available are Micromass 70-VSE (three), 70-SE-4F, Quattro II , Quattro Ultima, and Q-Tof Ultima instruments, two Applied Biosystems Voyager-DE STR instruments, and a ThermoFinnigan LCQ Deca XP instrument. There are three Hewlett Packard capillary gas chromatographs. Finally, there are HPLC systems on the LCQ and Q-Tof and a capillary LC on the Q-Tof.
Many research groups have an "expert" for mass spectrometry.
This person has received training in techniques performed in the
laboratory. Students should consult, if possible, with their expert
before bringing samples to the laboratory, especially for first-time
sample submitters. However, all users are welcome at all times
to visit the laboratory for discussion of their analyses.
