Empowering Women in Science
Women Chemists Committee
The ACS East Central Illinois Women Chemists Committee was founded in the fall of 2005 to promote the development of women in the chemical sciences. With the support of our local ACS chapter and the University of Illinois Chemistry department, we have planned events that include professional and social opportunities that benefit graduate students, faculty, staff, and undergraduates. Please contact us if you have any questions or would like to join.

Anne Baranger was born in Pittsburgh, PA. She received her B. S. from MIT in 1988, doing research in the lab of Stephen Buchwald. She then received a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in the lab of Robert Bergman; her research in this lab focused on the catalytic synthesis of enamines and an early-late heterobimetallic bridging imido complex. Following this, Baranger spent three years as a postdoc in the lab of Alanna Schepartz at Yale University. She came to Illinois in 2006 from Wesleyan University and is currently affiliated with the areas of Organic Chemistry and Chemical Biology, as well as with the Biophysics department.
The research in the Baranger group focuses on comprehending and controlling RNA recognition, both by proteins and other small molecules. With this information, her group aims to develop methods to control those biological processes that involve RNA. There have of late been many discoveries in the field of RNA, such as RNA interference, micro RNA, RNA switches, and many others, which gives Baranger's lab a variety of systems to study. It is definitely quite an exciting time to be working with RNA!
Recently, Baranger was appointed the Associate Head and Director of Graduate Studies. It is for this that we would like to recognize her.
Congratulations, Anne! We are delighted to feature you this month!
