APPROVED Chemical Engineering TECHNICAL ELECTIVES
For the degree B.S. in Chemical Engineering
with Concentration in Chemical Engineering
2008-2009 Academic Year

At least 18 hours must be selected from this approved list, satisfying these distribution requirements:

  1. 6 hours must be 400-level ChBE courses, with not more than 3 hours being CHBE 497 or 499.
  2. 3 hours any 400-level course from this list
  3. 6 hours any courses from this list.
  4. One course must be IE 300 or STAT 400. If STAT 400 (4 credit hours) is taken instead of IE 300 (3 credit hours), then 1 credit hour of technical elective credit will be given towards the "Any 400-level course" Technical Elective requirement. (b above)

A maximum of 10 total hours of undergraduate research may be counted toward Technical Elective credit.

Those courses approved as technical electives are listed below. Courses other than those listed will not normally be accepted as technical electives (see Notes below). Any exceptions must be approved by the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. A student requesting an exception must submit a petition to the Department. Go to 209 RAL to obtain a petition form, fill it out, have your advisor sign it, and submit it.

Aerospace Engineering:  all 300- and 400-level courses, except 395, 396, 397, and 497.

Agricultural and Biological Engineering:  436, 440, 483, 489, and 498.

Biochemistry:  455

Bioengineering:  414, 415, and 475, 498RJ.

Biology:  250 and 251.

Biophysics:  401 and 420.

Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering:  297, 397, 451, 452, 453, 454, 456, 457, 460, 471, 472 or 473, 474, 494, 497, and 499.

Chemistry:  312, 317, 421, 423, 437, 438, 445, 447, 472, 483, and 499.

Civil Engineering: all 300- and 400-level courses, except 490, 495, 497, and 498. (Technical elective credit will be allowed for only one of the following two courses: GE 330, IE 310.)

Computer Science: 110C, 110CP, 110F, 110J, 110M, 110P, 125, 173, all 300- and 400-level courses, except 397, 398, and 498. (Students taking any section of CS 110 may not receive credit for the course in the same language used to fulfill the CS 101 requirement.)

Electrical and Computer Engineering: 201, all 300- and 400-level courses, except 316, 396, 397, 398, 399, 486, 498, and 499.

Environmental Studies: 431, 432, 450, 451 and 480.

Food Science and Human Nutrition: 260, 302, 414, 415, 461, 462, and 469.

General Engineering: all 300- and 400-level courses, except 320, 397, 400, 401, 490, and 497. (Technical elective credit will be allowed for only one of the following two courses: GE 330, IE 310.)

Industrial Engineering: all 300 courses (except 300, 340 and 390) and 400-level courses (except 445, 451, 470, 496, and 497). (Technical elective credit will be allowed for only one of the following three courses: GE 330, IE 310, CEE 201.)

Integrative Biology: 150, 151.

Manufacturing Engineering: 310, 420, 430, and 450.

Material Science and Engineering: All 300- and 400-level courses, except 397, 398, 401, 492, 497, 498, and 499. (MSE 450 and CHBE 456 or MSE 451 and CHBE 456 will not both be accepted as technical electives.)

Mathematics: 213, 225. 257, 380, 412, 413, 415, 442, 444, 446, 447, 448, 450, 455, 458, 459, 461, 463, 464, 465, 466, 468, 469, 473, 475, 481, 482, 484, 489, 491, 493, 494, and 498.

Molecular and Cellular Biology: 100, 103, 150, 151, 250, 252, 253, 300, 301, 316, 317, 350 (of course, MCB 450 is not acceptable as a technical elective if it is used to replace CHEM 436 as a required course.), 400, 401, 402, 403, 406, 408, 420, 421, 422, 425, 430, 431, 434, and 452.

Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering: 201, all 400-level courses, except 498.

NOTES:

  1. Courses listed on the previous lists of approved technical electives but not on this list will be accepted if they were taken during or before the semester for which the older list was marked effective.
  2. Courses such as "Special Topics in...", "Individual Study", "Honors Project", etc. are not included in the list above. However, such courses may be accepted as technical electives if the student can demonstrate that the topic of the course or project in question is in an area of engineering science suitable for a student in chemical engineering.
