Biography

I graduated with a B.Sc. in Chemistry (Hons) from the University of Nairobi, Kenya, in 1997, and in the same year, I worked briefly for Regal pharmaceutical company. In 1998, I joined Beiersdorf E.A Ltd (makers of Nivea cosmetic products) where I remained until July 2000, when I came to Wayne State University for my graduate education with Dr. Mark Spaller.

In my doctoral research study, I worked on three projects that were of bioorganic/medicinal chemistry in nature. The first project was a method study of the aza-Diels-Alder reaction in the synthesis of anticancer heterolignans using traditional chemistry. The other two projects involved synthesis of reduced peptides and E-alkene dipeptide isosteres that target HIV-1 protease enzyme and PDZ domain proteins respectively.

In December 2006, I joined the Denmark group as a visiting postdoctoral research associate to work on the development of tandem ring-closing metathesis/silicon cross-coupling reactions and total synthesis of the natural product oximindine II.

During my free time, I love to travel (with my wife and daughter), meet people, and I am an avid sports fan.
