Biography

Although my interest in various chemistry fields started at an early age, my interest in organic chemistry started in 1998 and continued during my undergraduate studies at the University of Belgrade. As an undergraduate student I spent several months working in different research groups: Prof. James D. White's at Oregon State University (USA), Prof. Scott E. Denmark's at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA) and Prof. Klaus Peseke's at Rostock University (Germany). I completed my undergraduate thesis in the laboratory of Prof. Radomir N. Saicic at the University of Belgrade (Serbia) with the distinction of being the best undergraduate research project of 2003. In the fall of 2003, I commenced my graduate work at the University of Leeds (UK) under the supervision of Prof. Paul R. Blakemore and in early 2005 I moved to Oregon State University with the rest of the Blakemore group. My graduate studies involved synthesis, resolution, physical properties and application in enantioselective catalysis of rarely investigated 8,8´-biquinolyl molecules. This research resulted in development of novel tandem halogen dance/FeCl3 mediated oxidative coupling sequence for the synthesis of 8,8´-biquinolyls, two generation approaches for resolution of parent 8,8´-biquinolyl; it allowed determination of kinetic parameters for enantiomerization of the parent compound, studies on ρΚα dependence of the tether length of a series of cyclic 8,8´-biquinolyl diethers and demonstrated was first application of 8,8´-biquinolyl based molecule in catalysis of silylcyanation reaction. Upon defending my PhD thesis in June 2008, I joined the Denmark group in September to study catalytic nucleophilic allylations.
