Solid State Crystal Structures

You will need MDL Chemscape Chime, which is a 3-D molecular modeling plug-in for your browser, in order to view the molecules for this assignment. If you are working at the Chemistry Learning Center, you should not have any problems viewing the models. If for some reason you are having trouble because the models are not automatically loading with the plug-in, click on the "refresh" icon at the top of your screen. If that fails, reboot or move to another computer.

If you are working outside of the Chemistry Learning Center, the Chemscape Chime Plug-In for Netscape or Internet Explorer browsers can be downloaded from MDL Information Systems Chemscape Chime.

Helpful Hints

The manipulation of molecules in space using Chime 2.0 is controlled with the use of the mouse along with holding down either the right or left mouse button and/or the shift or control button on the keyboard. For more specific instructions on to arrange molecules in space, click here to view the mouse controls help page.

It may be easier to view the solid molecule displayed in the sticks or ball & stick mode as opposed to the default space-filling mode. To access the display and option menus, hold down the right click button when you are in Chime.

If you are unsure of the identity of the atoms in some of the models, use labels located in the Chime options menu since some of the colors may be the same even for different elements.

If Chime does not load properly, click on "refresh" located with the browser icons. If an error prompt appears, it may be necessary to reboot the computer, or move to another PC.

When finished viewing, click on "back" located with the browser icons to return to this page.

Please spend a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the software before you start on the assignment.

To view the molecules from the links below you will need to have installed on your computer the chemscape Chime Plug-In for the Netscape or Internet Explorer brower. The Chemscape Chime Plug-In can be downloaded from MDL Information Systems Chemiscape Chime.

The computers in the Chemistry Learning Center already have Chime installed.

To display and rotate the molecules, right click, and select either Display or Rotation.
For additional help with the mouse controls, open the menu page by holding down the mouse button in the Chime display.
