Fall Picnics at Lake of the Woods

The map above is of Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve.  To get there head west on Interstate 74 to exit #174.  From there follow the map above to the Lake of the Woods Pavilion.  (From exit 174 go right onto Prairieview Rd., Left onto Tin Cup Rd., Left onto Lake of the Woods Rd. (don't take the entrance right in front of Tin Cup Rd.), Right into the main entrance follow that road to the pavilion on the right)

Not only does the annual fall picnic give you a chance to get to know your fellow graduate students and talk to the faculty outside work, it's a chance for you to win honor and glory for your area!  The areas compete in both physical and mental events with the winner taking home the trophy and bragging rights for the year.  Pictured above are last year's winners--the organic team.  Below, the inorganic team discusses their football strategy.

Holiday Party

The annual Department of Chemistry Holiday Party will take place this year on December 9th.  Mark your calendars, because this is one of the high points of the year!

Along with the fall picnic, the holiday party is a chance for graduate students, faculty and support staff to spend time together outside of work.  The evening involves food, wine and student-run entertainment.

Pizza Lunches

Once a month DCGSAC sponsors an "almost free pizza lunch."  The current cost is $2 for three slices of pizza and a drink for students, and $3 for anyone else who would like to come--a bargain that can't be beat!  It's also a great opportunity for the graduate students, post-docs, and faculty to socialize.

Happy Hour

DCGSAC periodically arranges a happy hour--including drink and food specials--at one of the local off-campus bars.  Usually on a Friday or Saturday, these events are a fantastic way to end the week and are yet another chance to meet other people in the department, have some good food, and lay down a few beers.  Our latest bar of choice is the Firehaus on Sixth St. in campus town.  Not only do they give us a great rate for the beer and food, but they genuinely seem to enjoy our patronage.

Poster Session

This year we are trying to introduce more educational events that would allow students the opportunity to see what is going on in other labs in the department.  Our first event idea is a poster session held early in the fall to help the new graduate students reach their decision about labs before enabling date.  A few students from each lab would be encouraged to present their work, and it will be a great opportunity for existing students to catch up on what their peers are doing in other labs.

T-Shirts

We also have started to sell t-shirts and polos advertising the chemistry department periodically throughout the year.  The next time they will be on sale will be this fall.
