Brahmagupta (b. 598) was one of the great mathematicians of the "high period" of Hindu mathematics (200-1200). Most of their work was motivated by astronomy and astrology. More than thirteen centuries ago, Brahmagupta wrote: "As the sun eclipses the stars by its brilliancy, so the man of knowledge will eclipse the fame of others in assemblies of people if he proposes algebraic problems, and still more if he solves them." This point of view is still held by many mathematicians even today.
