HILBERT, DAVID (1862 - 1943). Partielle Differentialgleichungen. Gottingen: Winter Semester 1895-1896.

German mathematician. When Hilbert died in 1943 he was already a legend, and some of his most spectacular contributions were more than 40 years old. In 1943 a great deal of mathematics, its methods and problems, were the result of Hilbert's work. His famous 23 problems were stated in 1900. Instantly they became central, and those who settled any of them won great fame. The third problem was settled almost immediately, and by 1940 six more had been solved. Since then another 7 or so have been settled.

Hilbert's work in geometry and foundations is both his most influential and most accessible.

The volume on display consists of handwritten notes taken from one of Hilbert's lectures.
