Over the years, the Mathematics Library has acquired a substantial part of Cauchy's works. Many others have been transferred to the Rare Book Room as their value increased. We were able to add other volumes to the collection with funds from the Carmichael bequest. (Carmichael had been a professor in the Department of Mathematics from 1915-1947 and a great supporter of the library). This volume was selected for display because it is a first edition containing Cauchy's development of laws of reciprocity, quadratic and cubic residues, and residues of higher degrees. This Mémoire is the first draft of what became a much larger work, published under the same title in 1838. Thus, a present day bequest allow us to build on the strengths of the past.
PURCHASED IN 1986 WITH CARMICHAEL BEQUEST FUNDS FOR $250.
