CHEBYSHEV, PAFNUTIL L'VOVICH (1821 - 1894). Theorie der Congruenzen. Berlin: 1889.

Chebyshev proved an important theorem about prime numbers. Let Pi (x) denote the number of primes ‹=x. Then there are positive numbers C-1 and C2 such that C-1x/ log x‹p(x) ‹C-2x/ log x for all x›=2. Besides number theory Chebyshev worked on a wide range of scientific topics including probability theory and mechanics. At one time his book Theory of Congruences (Theorie der Congruenzen) was used as a textbook in Russian universities.
