An early success of Jacobi in number theory was his work on the cubic reciprocity law. More importantly, he together with Abel founded the theory of elliptic functions. Jacobi also did important work in mechanics. V.I. Arnold writes concerning the Hamilton-Jacobi method "…This is the most powerful method known for exact integration."
Originally he had a post in Konigsberg but obtained special permission (and a big-city salary supplement) from Friedrich Wilhelm IV to where the climate was milder.
